Bringing home a newborn is one of the most joyful — and often nerve-wracking — experiences for new parents. Among the many things to learn in those first few weeks, umbilical cord care is one of the most common questions Dr. Dipayan Roy hears from parents at Doctors Point Diagnostic Center in Sreemangal.

Why Umbilical Cord Care Matters

After birth, the remaining part of the umbilical cord (the stump) typically falls off on its own within one to two weeks. During this time, the area needs to stay clean and dry to heal properly and avoid infection.

Simple Steps for Newborn Cord Care

  1. Keep it dry. Avoid submerging the stump in water during baths. Sponge baths are safer until the cord falls off naturally.
  2. Avoid oils and powders. Many parents are told by well-meaning relatives to apply oils, turmeric, or powders to the area. Dr. Roy advises against this unless specifically recommended by a doctor, as it can trap moisture and increase infection risk.
  3. Let it fall off naturally. Never pull or forcibly remove the stump, even if it looks like it’s barely attached.
  4. Fold the diaper down. Keeping the diaper below the cord stump prevents irritation and keeps the area exposed to air.

When to See a Doctor

While some redness during healing is normal, contact Dr. Roy promptly if you notice:

A Word from Dr. Roy
